ARTISTIC APPROACH

MY UNDERGROUND MOTHER is an auteur-driven documentary that blends cinema verité with animation, on-location interviews with rare archival footage, diary passages with music from the camp. Shot by award-winning DPs around the world like Emmy winning Polish-American filmmaker Slawomir Grünberg and Israeli DP Dror Lebendiger (a collaborator of David Attenborough's), the film takes you to overlooked sites of persecution in the present day,

The diary will have its own visual treatment thanks to animation by Molly Schwartz (Watchers of the Sky, The Worlds of Ursula K. LeGuin), who will render the inner and outer landscape of Gabersdorf, a camp that has since been torn down and for which no historic footage exists. The all-women’s band BETTY is interpreting songs from the camp in English and will sound design and record a dramatic reading of diary passages by teenage girls, including Gabersdorf descendants.
